How to Clean, Oil and Maintain Your Custom Made Exotic Hardwood(s) Boards

    - Wash wooden boards with a bit of hot soapy water, rinse, wipe clean, and allow to dry upright.  Do not soak your boards in water or they'll warp!
    - Depending on how often you use your boards, you should also give them an oiling to help maintain their surface and keep them from drying out. In our household, this happens about once a month but we know some people who do it only once or twice a year and yet others on a weekly basis.
    - The oil should be food grade and not prone to rancidity. Mineral oil is an inexpensive and popular choice.  (Walnut oil, almond oil, and pure tung oil are good alternatives, but stay away from olive or vegetable oils, as they turn rancid quickly.) Reapply until the wood stops absorbing the oil. Wipe off excess and dry board overnight.
    - Before you start, be sure your boards are very clean. We like to give them a scrub with lemon and salt, as shown in this method.

    -  The boards should also be dry before oiling, so be sure to build that into your timing. The oil should be left to soak in as long as possible, too. We try to apply the oil in the evening before bed and then just give them a quick wipe the next morning to take off any excess oil.
